@GoddessFish Promotions: Chatting with Author, @Ryshia Kennie - Fatal Intent

Today we welcome Ryshia Kennie, on tour now with her book Fatal Intent, over at Goddess Fish Promotions

The grand prize for the tour will be an autographed copy of From the Dust, a book unique bookmark, and a Region 1 DVD of East of Borneo, a 1931 B&W movie -- this giveaway is open internationally.

BK: Please tell us a little about yourself...

I’m from Saskatchewan and grew up in the same prairie city where I live now.

I’ve been writing all my life but was first published near the end of 2007 with my historic romance From the Dust, a novel set in the Qu’Appelle Valley, a short distance from where I live. Since then I’ve written a medieval paranormal and then discovered that what I really loved was romantic suspense. I suppose growing up as a cop’s daughter, that shouldn’t have been a surprise. What was a surprise was that it took me two books to get there.

What else about me? Favourite desert - I’d say ice cream but just the other day I was reminded about something I haven’t had since childhood, Red Velvet cake, and I sampled a piece and then, how could I not, I bought a cake. Heaven, is all I can say. But I digress, what I meant to say is that I’ll hold out on the main meal to leave room for dessert every time.

I love reading and I suppose that was what began my writing career. I read multiple genres and both fiction and non-fiction and often more than one book at a time. Besides reading, I love nothing better than hauling my bike out on a warm summer day and going for a ride. But the reality of life on the prairie is that warm days are fewer than cold days. So walking is more common than bike riding. I’m not one of those intrepid souls who ride my bike in snow or wind or even rain. So I walk every day because, well – I have a dog. While on my walks, I’ve had a few adventures including, being attacked by a dog, assisting a recluse/hoarder locked out of her house, and rescuing two lost children.

When I’m not walking the neighbourhood exercising my little Irish Terrier, I’m writing or harassing my husband to plan another trip. He’s the trip planner in the family and many of my stories, at least the romantic suspense, are set in the places I’ve visited. I love to travel and sometimes I think I could have happily been a nomad, especially now in the digital age when it’s so easy to carry your work along with you and staying in touch with family and friends is a breeze.

Speaking of trips – I’m beginning to finger my passport.

BK: Please tell us a little about your book....

Fatal Intent is a murder-mystery tangled in a romance. When Garrett Cole sets off in a career changing moment to lead a team of entomologists into the Borneo jungle, she doesn’t expect to be abandoned and lost mere days later. But that’s what happens when her guide is discovered headless and she must get her team to safety without even a compass to guide her.

It is then that Aidan makes an appearance. Adopted into the jungle at an early age, he is a man with a foot in two worlds. Garrett is forced to trust Aidan for he is the only person who might be able to get them out of the jungle alive.

Aidan is immediately drawn to the feisty, small blonde woman who is obviously in charge of the rag-tag group of men. He’s also suspicious, the guide’s death screams foul play and he can’t rule out Garrett or her team as primary suspects. But his method of investigation draws them further into the jungle and as hours lead to days, passion and betrayal become uneasy bed partners.

In a game of wills with two opposing agendas, Garrett and Aidan might find love but can either of them be trusted?

BK: What inspired you to pen this particular novel?

The idea for Fatal Intent came out of a trip to Borneo where I visited an Iban longhouse. I remember walking up those worn, steep wooden steps from the river and seeing the verandah stretched out with mats and rice drying, the weather beaten old women looking at us almost with distrust or possibly disdain, and the human skull hanging from the rafter. Now the skull might have been there for the benefit of tourists but I like the explanation our guide offered, that it was the last head hunted over a hundred years ago. That skull and the longhouse were the seed of the story.

BK: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I don’t remember ever not wanting to write. But I think the true beginnings were in the later years of grade school when I was inspired by my English teacher who loved my first line, a historic barber shop where the barber slits the man’s throat – I believe that was the premise of that first line. After that I was hooked and wrote in the margins of my notebooks all the way through school.

BK: How do you keep your story flowing?

I end each chapter with something unanswered, a question. The trick is to know your characters before you begin and have a good idea where the story is going. I do have a synopsis but mostly keep it flowing by editing as I go. In a way I’m telling myself the story and asking the questions a reader might as I go along.

BK: Do you ever run into writer's block, and if so, what do you do to get past it?

I use to when I thought I had to be inspired to write. Now when the inspiration isn’t there I know it’s time to get out the synopsis and start plotting. Sometimes I’ll find too that just typing what comes to your head, kind of like throwing paint at a wall, actually brings inspiration and before I know it the story is flowing again.

BK: What is your writing process like? Do you have any quirks, or must-haves to write?

I’m a sucker for slap me upside the head beginnings – usually something dire. Whatever inspired me, if possible, I want to include in that first paragraph. Like a human skull in Borneo, or death by arsenic in From the Dust or water torture in Ring of Desire. While they all weren’t even major elements of the plot, they all in some way influenced the beginning of a story.

As far as quirky must-haves. I keep a good luck charm or two on my desk. I have a little bronze Buddha that reminds me to take a breath, remain calm and hang in – everything will work out. And in case the little Buddha isn’t enough I have a rock from Mount Vesuvius that a friend brought back from a trip to Italy. The rock isn’t a big piece of that powerful volcano but it reminds me that while it might be small, the volcanic blast of its origins was mighty – keep writing.

BK: Where do you hope your books/writing will be in the future?

I’d like to see my stories in the hands of more readers. I’d like a big backlist, a bestseller…I could blue sky forever. But what I really want is for readers to love my stories and look forward to the publication of each one.

BK: What do you hope readers will take away from your books?

I don’t know if I want readers to take away much more than that pleasant feeling you have when you’ve read a good story and you’re kind of sad to put it away and leave the characters and that world behind. If my books do that, then I’ve done my job.

BK: What is one piece of advice you received that you carry with you in your writing?

Write every day.

BK: What is one piece of advice you would give to new and aspiring writers?

Stop writing in the margins and make a writing schedule, one you follow every day no matter what. The muse may come to you occasionally but that won’t make a career.

BK: Are you currently working on any new projects? What can we expect from you in the future?

My next book will be published this summer and I’m currently working on final edits. It’s a romantic suspense set in Cambodia. I particularly love this story. Some of the secondary characters can be brutal but unique enough that it was fun getting into their slightly twisted heads. And of course, Simon and Claire, I loved writing their love story while reliving the mysterious beauty of Cambodia….

In the shadow of Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, evil lurks. Innocent women have already died and journalist, Claire Linton is now targeted. The story of her career is about to turn deadly. She hopes for answers when she meets Interpol agent, Simon Trent. Instead, he’s frustrating and secretive and turns up so often, it’s clear he’s following her. And as kisses ignite beneath the golden streaks of a Cambodian sunset and passion begins to ramp up, a decades old plot for revenge unfolds. But with trust at a premium and lives at stake – has love been outplayed?

BK: Thank you so much for chatting today Ryshia. It's been so much fun, and I wish you the best of luck in the future.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Excerpt:
Aidan moved vines back, exposing his face. They only had to look in his direction.
He was so close he could have reached out and touched her. She was delicate, out of place here in the midst of this wilderness. Her skin, even beneath the sweat and exertion-stained flush, was fair. She wasn’t built to be here, she was too slight to survive, too weak, too . . .
She glanced up. A frown immediately seared her face.
“Who the hell are you?” she snarled.
He bit back a smile. She should have screamed. She hadn’t. All tiny limbs and fragile beauty, and yet she attacked first.
He let his gaze rove over the group, refusing to be corralled by her attack.
One of the men looked panicked, the others seriously stressed. He shifted his spear to his other hand and waited, taking the warrior advantage of time and observation. The silent often learned much about their enemy.
“Put that down.” She gestured to his spear.
His fingers loosened for a millisecond before gripping the spear tighter. Was she out of her mind? Green, innocent, and totally forest-illiterate, but she was feisty.
Feisty? She was seething, hot, absolutely pissed—about what, he wasn’t sure. Her anger didn’t make much sense. Nothing about this afternoon made much sense.
@GoddessFish Book Tour Interview & #Giveaway with Andrea Stein - Rough Harbor
Welcome to BK Walker Books Etc.
I'm so happy you could join me today at my ‘home office’ – really it’s a little piece carved out of barn. There’s light and heat, but not much else. And everyone once and awhile there’s some odd rustling –but the kids can’t get in.
BK: Please tell us a little about yourself...
I live in New Jersey, in a surprisingly country-like part of the state. I used to live in New York City and now I get nervous because there are too many people and too much traffic when I have to go to the mall. I have three young kids and a husband, and in a former life I used to be an IT (information technology) consultant, but I spent all my time in meetings daydreaming about stories.
BK: Please tell us a little about your book....
Rough Harbor is about love lost and regained. High school sweethearts Noah and Caitlyn parted on bad terms and find themselves thrown together when Noah returns to town to take over the family company. There’s a wrinkle – Caitlyn wants the company too, and now they have to decide what’s more important – business or romance.
BK: What inspired you to pen this particular novel?
I married my high school sweetheart, but I know many people who didn’t. Still there’s always that feeling of “what might have been” about the one that got away. Or maybe you’re glad they got away…And nothing quite compares to your first love, especially when both characters have had time to grow apart into different people. Are you still compatible? Or do you just need to figure out the answer to that question – was he/she the one?
BK: When did you first consider yourself a writer?
I always wanted to be a writer pretty much from the get go. I used to write in journals – most of which I still have, but I am afraid to read them, too much teenage angst. UGH. And then I got my first word processor (not a computer) but a word processor, and I started to bang out a story inspired by Out of Africa…. And then I felt that I needed to do something ‘real’ with my life so I focused on getting a real job and writing took a back seat. Along the way I got married, had three kids, and then I realized I’m not getting any younger, so about four years ago - I got serious about writing. I started to sit and do it on a consistent basis. And that’s when the books started coming.
BK: How do you keep your story flowing?
Frying pan into the fire – romance isn’t necessarily an adventure story where you need constant action, but pretty much if you stop and think about the worst thing that could happen – even if it’s a phone call interrupting the first kiss, then that creates tension and excitement. Basically, just remember “the course of true love never did run smooth…”
BK: Do you ever run into writer's block, and if so, what do you do to get past it?
It’s not so much writer’s block as it is distraction. I rarely run out of things to write, but I do have trouble focusing and carving out time to write – with three young kids and a husband, there are a lot of things nipping away at my time –from email, to school notes to write, to troubled sleep that all cut into productive writing time.
BK: What is your writing process like? Do you have any quirks, or must-haves to write?
I am definitely a person who writes on a computer. My handwriting is terrible and trying to write long hand is mostly useless – I cannot not read what I write, so I write on a computer. And music helps – I’m tone deaf, so I don’t really care what it is so much as it just kind of creates a white noise barrier to the outside world.
BK: Where do you hope your books/writing will be in the future?
I would like to myself with a study backlist of books. And as my kids get older, I envision my writing process and time to be more like a daytime job – as opposed to early in the morning or late at night – because I’m unfortunately not a morning person or a night owl.
BK: What do you hope readers will take away from your books?
That every love story is special. It doesn’t always take a ravishingly handsome bazillonaire to whisk us a away – and that there’s a place in romance for strong, career minded women
BK: What is one piece of advice you received that you carry with you in your writing?
Bum glue. You can dream stories, and think about characters but unless you sit in a chair day after day and type or put pen to paper you’re not going to have much more than a head full of talking characters.
BK: What is one piece of advice you would give to new and aspiring writers?
Use an outline.
BK: Wow. I think that's the first time I've been given that piece of advice. I like it. Are you currently working on any new projects?
What can we expect from you in the future? I am working on another romance, Ivy Cottage, also set in Queensbay, featuring a new couple – Chase and Phoebe whose grandparents once had a torrid affair and very public . Phoebe inherits the Ivy Cottage, location of said affair and Chase wants to buy it. They find themselves attracted to each other, but wonder if their recreating their grandparents “Affair of the Century” or if it’s true love.
BK: Where can readers find you?
Www.andreasteinbooks.com is the best place to find me and on twitter: Twitter.com/andreasteinbook
Thank you so much for taking time to chat with me today. It's been a pleasure having you and I wish you much success in the future.
THANKS
About The Author:
Hi, I’, Andrea Stein an author, mother, wife and blogger and a certified mom-chauffeur. I have been scribbling stories for as long as I can remember, including my first adventure story, inspired by an obsession with Out of Africa (book, movie and biography) about a young girl stranded in Kenya. It was serial fiction handwritten, given to my sister, who couldn’t read my handwriting. That story dies after one installment, but the next year I got a word processor (not a computer, but an ACTUAL WORD PROCESSOR) that showed about twenty lines of text at a time. This was before laptops were widely available and this allowed me to be able to type to my heart’s content in the privacy of my own room. Which I did. I think I spent the time writing stories about my “frenemies” to amuse myself. I also listened to a lot of the Cure and New Wave music. I have since moved on to a happier place.
Even though I read lots of different types of books, I write romance novels with a twist. More like contemporary romance than romantic suspense (I don’t write about serial killers or FBI agents) but I usually like to include a puzzle or mystery for my hero and heroine to solve.
Rough Harbor is my second novel, set in a small New England town. Coming soon is Ivy Cottage, also set in a small New England town on a river.
Other than writing I spend most of my time reading, watching TV, cooking, cleaning, taking care of kids, trying to keep the house clean and folding laundry. I love Twizzlers, chocolate and shows on the WB. For me, reading has always been an escape, a way to escape the ordinary and dive into a world that feels real – but with all of the ‘boring’ parts edited out.
As for the rest of my life, I grew up on Long Island, spent a lot of vacations in small New England towns, went to college in New York City, married by high school sweetheart, worked, had kids, stopped working, and kept on writing. Now I live in rural New Jersey (yes, there is such a thing), and though I don’t own any horses, I do have a barn, which I share with squirrels.
There’s something successful writers always tell new writers about their secret to success. Just do it…Bum Glue…write 1ooo words a day…write for two hours a day….Keep writing. And they’re right. I got more successful with my writing when I started to do it consistently. I don’t write every day, but I shoot for five days a week. This means that the words and pages pile up — and I have stories to shape, make and mold…and share.
I hope you enjoy my books, currently available at www.amazon.com
BLURB:
After a bitter break up and professional set back in London, twenty seven year old Caitlyn has returned to Queensbay to work for Maxwell Randall, an old family friend, at his financial management firm. So far, bit by bit, Caitlyn’s been rebuilding all she lost after Michael St. John broke her heart …and tried to ruin her professional reputation.
But her past comes back to haunt her when Maxwell unexpectedly turns up dead. Not only does Caitlyn find her career in jeopardy but her heart is too, when Noah Randall, Maxwell’s son, and her first love, returns to Queensbay. Once, ten years ago, Caitlyn was sure Noah was the one for her…but the tragedy of her grandfather’s suicide and Noah’s decision to leave town left her bereft…and determined never to trust him again.
Over the past decade, she’s managed to do her best to forget about Noah Randall and the lingering questions surrounding her grandfather’s suicide. But now that’s he back in town – rich and more handsome than ever, and she can’t help wondering what if? What if Noah really was the one?
Noah Randall left home ten years ago to seek his fortune – vowing never to return until he’d made a success of himself – and show Caitlyn Montgomery just what she’d given up. He returns to find that Caitlyn Montgomery has only grown more alluring with time. Noah’s always wanted he couldn’t have…and now he wants Caitlyn again. But she’s determined not to make the same mistake twice.
While Noah and Caitlyn are revisiting old ground – and forging a new relationship, there’s trouble brewing in Queensbay. Old secrets and new lead Caitlyn to believe that perhaps her grandfather didn’t kill himself – and that Maxwell’s death was no accident. But just how far will someone go to keep her – and Noah – from finding out the truth…and will Queesbay prove to have troubled waters after all?
Excerpt Two:
Noah leaned in closer, his lips hovering above hers, his arms moving around her, pulling her closer to him, so he could feel his body next to hers, feel the swell of her breasts, see every freckle on her nose.
I have people for that,” he murmured, letting his lips feather across her. Her eyes opened wide, and he knew that she was feeling, that he had gotten to her.
Noah…” It was more of a moan than a whisper.
Shh, I know you’re not after my money. Just shut up and let me…”
Kiss you. And he did, their lips touching. Softly at first, so he could taste her, smell her perfume, something spicy, and her shampoo, something fruity. She moved in his arms – not away, but closer – and he took that for an invitation, an invitation that his attentions were wanted.
He deepened his kiss, letting his tongue explore, letting his hands slide from her shoulders down to the V of her neck, skimming lightly over her breasts, feeling the fabric of her bra, then the hard nub of her nipples which sprang to attention under his caress.
She moaned, answering his kiss, her hands running through his hair, pulling him towards her as their embrace deepened, grew more passionate, his hands roaming feeling, possessing her.
Until. “Stop, Noah, stop.” She broke free, her head moving away from him, her hands still twined in his hair. She lowered her eyes and leaned against his shoulders.
What, what is it?” His voice was husky, raspy, and he could feel desire, the sheer wanting of her flowing through him, all the way through it. She felt it, too, and took a step back.
Noah, you’re the boss. And we barely know each other. I mean now. I just can’t get involved right now.”
AUTHOR Bio and Links:
For years I've been fascinated by the puzzle of why some people collapse under life's traumas and others emerge triumphantly stronger. These triumphs of the human spirit over the ugliest of adversities became the basis for my stories. Yet my dramatic stories have always contained touches of humor, and sometimes I have great fun writing romantic comedy novellas. However, in all my stories, my passion for writing romance is an outlet for the powerful messages that people can overcome great difficulties, and true love can turn life’s heartaches into happily ever after.
Genre: Women's Fiction
BLURB:
Super-mom Tallie O'Shea took on eight adopted children and built a legacy of compassionate justice with her policeman husband. When he is gunned down, she doesn't think it's an accident. Then a former lover shows up and the lies from her past start unraveling. As dangers explode around her, can Tallie set things right before everything she loves is destroyed?
Excerpt:
Back at the house, Pierce cornered Tallie. "What's the deal with a dredge?"
Tallie looked at him closely. Distinguished gray at the temples, eyes as sharply blue as they had been so many years ago. Still take-your-breath-away handsome, and here she was with a rifle on her hip, her hair wild with the natural curl turning to frizz, her minimal make-up of mascara and lip gloss cried and worried off, and wearing work-worn clothes to clean the house.
Though she regarded news conferences as media circuses, she never imagined this would end in Halo literally exploding with her children right in the middle of the action. Oh, yes, they were Bernie's kids. Even as she worried, immense pride filled Tallie's heart. Bernie's legacy of courage and compassion lived in his children. In their children.
"When she was a teenager, Marly rode a motorbike up the conveyor belt of an old mining dredge, revved it up as fast as it would go, and jumped over the gap to come down on the other side of the pond. She was so proud because none of her brothers could do it. They were too big and heavy."
As Tallie told the anecdote, Pierce's face grew paler and paler. "Is that as dangerous as it sounds?"
GFP Excerpt Tour: Over the Mountain and Back by Marie Astor
Don't you just love this cover? Please welcome Marie Astor to the blog today, on tour with Goddess Fish Promotions with her book, Over the Mountain and Back. Marie is also offering a chance for you to win a $25 Amazon Gift Card, so be sure to leave a comment for a chance to win.
Welcome Marie!
Dear Reader,
Thank you very much for joining me for Over the Mountain and Back blog tour. The story of Over the Mountain and Back began over twenty years ago when I was fourteen years old and decided to write a novel as an anniversary gift for my parents. It was going to be a fantasy adventure about a boy named Peter and a girl named Lara set in a magical country, Transadonia. I remember writing studiously on the pages of an ornate notebook I had acquired especially for the occasion. Back then computers were not yet widely used, so I had to pay extra care to my handwriting. A year later, Over the Mountain and Back was completed, or at least I had thought so at the time. Needless to say my parents were very surprised with their anniversary gift.
Years passed; I finished high school and went on to college. Lara’s and Peter’s story faded from my mind, replaced by the hustles and bustles of everyday life. Then, one day – the day that happened to be my thirtieth birthday, my parents presented me with a gift: it was oblong in shape and wrapped in shiny paper. After I opened the wrapping, I was stunned to find the long forgotten story I had written all those years ago.
Long story short, after two years of extensive work, I rewrote and expanded Over the Mountain and Back into a novel of 95,000 words. For me it had been an exciting journey to be reunited with my old friends: Lara and Peter, Forest Witch Ramona, Chancellor Libra, Bookbrownies, and, of course, Carnelion, among the many others.
I hope that you will join Lara and Peter on their adventure in Transadonia.
If you would like to find out more about my books, please stop by website: www.marieastor.com.
Regards,
Marie Astor
With his father gone missing and his mother losing her grip on reality, Peter Bailey’s life is nopicnic. Peter’s gray existence changes unexpectedly after he takes his new snowboard for a ride in the mountains of Colorado and is stunned to find himself in Transadonia – a hidden world
that coexists alongside with the Earth.
Lara Grover never listened to her elders, so warnings like “do not talk to strangers” mean nothing to her. When a boy from an unknown world saves her from an avalanche with the aid of a snow dragon, Lara is not stunned in the least. Instead, she joins Peter on his quest to help him realize the purpose behind his arrival to Transadonia.
Together, Lara and Peter embark on an adventure filled with perils, trickery, betrayals, and unexpected alliances.
Excerpt:
When Peter walked into the store, his eyes immediately darted to the glossy display of newly arrived snowboards propped against the wall. In the center of the display stood a beautiful snowboard painted in bright neon colors with a sign underneath: The unbeatable Jamie Fox rode this snowboard when he won last year’s Snow Rider competition. Ask the store owner how you can ride Jamie’s board.
Peter could not turn his gaze away from the magnificent snowboard. How amazing it must be to ride a board like that, he thought, reaching out to touch the brightly colored plastic surface. Suddenly, his reverie was rudely interrupted.
“What have we here? Peter Bailey wants to ride my board?” sounded a mocking voice from behind.
Even without turning around, Peter knew that the sneering voice belonged to none other than Jamie himself - the reigning champion of the Snow Rider competition for the past five years. Jamie’s father owned the ski resort, and it was largely argued that it was not Jamie’s prowess, but his father’s connections that ensured Jamie’s unchallenged success.
“Hi, Jamie.” Peter nodded curtly.
As usual, Jamie was surrounded by a posse of boys who were willing to put up with his bullying in exchange for free lift passes and other perks that his father could provide. Today, though, someone else was with them: Beverly Nooner, the most popular girl in school. Beverly’s blond curls and blue eyes drew wistful glances from all the boys in the school, yet most would not dare so much as speak to her since Beverly was Jamie’s girl, and no one wanted to challenge Jamie. For her part, Beverly enjoyed the attention fully and used it to her advantage. She was in the same class with Peter and had copied his math homework on several occasions, but now she averted her eyes, pretending that she did not know who he was.
“Planning to ride in the competition?” Jamie smirked.
“As a matter of fact, yes,” answered Peter, determined not to let Jamie’s mockery get to him. Deep down he knew that Jamie would never go beyond verbal assaults, and Peter was not going to give him the satisfaction.
“I wouldn’t if I were you,” said Jamie smugly. “The board I’ll be riding is even better than the one you’ve been ogling. You don’t stand a chance.” This statement was accompanied by cheering from Jamie’s gang.
“It’s not just about the board, Jamie. It’s the riding skills that matter,” replied Peter calmly. “And if I were you, I’d spend more time practicing and less talking, or your lucky streak just might run out.”
At the sound of Peter’s words, Jamie’s clique began to hoot, but Jamie silenced them with a snap of his fingers.
“If I were you, I’d keep an eye out tomorrow, or things might just end badly for you,” hissed Jamie, his face contorted in an ugly grimace. “Let’s get out of here,” he called to his gang. Grabbing Beverly’s arm, Jamie shoved past Peter toward the exit, almost knocking him down to the floor.
Readers, BK thought you’d enjoy hearing about the craziest thing I’ve ever written about, whether it was published or not.  I really had to wrack my brain to come up with something, because my writing is not what you’d call crazy.  I don’t write about zombies or ghosts or vampires or anything like that.  My tagline is, “Everyday life with just a touch of worst case scenario.”
But never fear!  I do have a crazy story to tell you about my early writing career.  It’s actually the story of how I first got published.  It was back in the dark ages before our years had a “2” on them!  I had written my first manuscript, opened up a huge reference book full of publishers, closed my eyes and pointed to one … and decided that publisher was a perfect fit!  I printed out and mailed my chapters and a query, and lo and behold, got a request for a full manuscript.  With shaky breath I mailed it off, sending along with it a little prayer for success.  According to the publisher, I should hear something sometime around February of 2000.
In my newbie naivetĂ©, I was convinced that I would hear something from this publisher ON February 1.  I had it circled on my calendar and everything.  They had wanted an email address to contact me with, but back in the dark ages, I didn’t even have an email address.  But my mother did!  Well, sort of.  Do you remember an old invention called “Web TV?”  You got a keyboard that connected to your television and you could actually get email through it.  I had given this publisher my mother’s web TV address and figured she would keep me informed.
That is, until their annual trek down south came along, the time every year that they escape the cold winter of the Midwest and head to the beach.  Can you blame them?  So, armed with their house key, I drove across town every few days to check the web TV and, oh yeah, water the plants while I was there.  (I’m such a dutiful daughter.)  On February 1, a coating of snow covered the ground.  I parked in their driveway and tromped to the front door.  I went inside, pulled up the web TV, and … no dice. No email from the publisher. Oh well, good things are worth waiting for. I headed back to the car.
I came back a few days later and despite digging through my purse, my car tray, my glove compartment and my coat pocket, I couldn’t for the life of me locate my parents’ house key. Frustrated with myself, I went home, where I proceeded to tear my house apart, looking for the stupid key.  Which I NEVER found.
A few days later I got a phone call from the sheriff of my parents’ neighborhood.  Knowing when my parents leave for the winter, he was making his rounds, stopped by my parents’ house and got out of his car.  Looking down at the now melted, wet pavement of their driveway, something sparkled at him in the sunlight.  Picking it up, he saw that it was a house key.  And that it opened the front door!  Not real secure. He checked their records and saw that I was their contact person.
I raced over and refrained from hugging and kissing the man.  After proving who I was, I grabbed the key, raced inside and waited torturous moments for Web TV to pull up.  My delight turned to horror when I saw that the publisher had sent not ONE, not TWO, but THREE emails!
The first, “We love your manuscript and want to offer you a publishing contract,” (I’m paraphrasing).  “Contact us in the next 48 hours if you’re interested.”
The second, “Second notice that if you want us to publish your book, you have 24 hours to respond.”
And OH HORRORS the third, “We didn’t hear from you, but …”  I didn’t even wait to read THE BUT!  I immediately responded to each and every email practically SCREAMING at them that I wanted the contract!  Then I printed it out and took it to the Post Office and mailed it overnight so they’d get it in the morning.  No way was I going to miss out on this!
And I didn’t.  That book became my first published book, Whispers of the Heart.  The book that made me a published author and changed my life forever.  And guess what, that first email did actually arrive on Feb 1! What’s the odds of that?
Now, I’m celebrating the release of my seventh book, Keeper by Surprise, the story of Keith Hanson, a carefree college student loving life away from under the thumb of a strict upbringing when suddenly, everything changes.  He’s named guardian over his three siblings when Mom and Dad die in a car accident.  You’ll cry, you’ll laugh and you’ll root for Keith as he rises to the challenges of his new responsibilities.  Good thing beautiful Lisa Carle, the social worker assigned to his case, is there to help him and steal his heart.  She’s a woman to be reckoned with!
So, in the Comments, please tell me … what’s the craziest thing that’s ever happened to you that turned out with a happy ending?  Or just stop by the Comment board to say hi.  I will be drawing a name from my Commenters for a small prize today.  Thanks so much for having me!
Excerpt One:
From Chapter One:
Keith pulled up in front of the Alpha Chi Omega house and parked. He tugged at the torturous bowtie and started up the sidewalk, then trotted up the steps to the massive front door. Once inside the sorority house, he gazed around the extravagant foyer. The walls were lined with scarlet velvet and the plush carpet was olive green. A huge vase of red carnations sat on the circular table occupying the center of the foyer. The house had always seemed to him like a metaphor for the girls who lived inside. Beautiful, classy, and just a tad out of his reach.
A movement at the top of the stairway captured his attention. Carly. He turned and his breath caught in his throat. He knew he was gawking at her as she began to descend the stairs. He couldn’t help it. She was gorgeous. She stepped gracefully onto the massive staircase and paused to giggle at his reaction.
My God, that dress. It was absolutely perfect on her. The emerald color gave her a regal look and it was form-fitting in all the right places. Like her breasts. And her tiny waist. Her auburn hair fell in graceful curls around her shoulders. As she reached the bottom of the stairs, she turned away from him to brush the floor-length skirt and he caught a glimpse of the back of the dress. His heart quickened when he saw how low-cut it was. Her entire back was exposed in a V pattern, leaving absolutely no doubt in his mind there was no barrier between her skin and that fabric.
“Your mouth is hanging open, you know.”
